Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects the eyes. It is caused by damage to the blood vessels in the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye, i.e. the retina.
It may initially present with no symptoms or mild vision problems. However, it can progress to blindness.
Both people with type I and type II DM can develop this complication.
